Begonia rex/masoniana (leaf begonia)

Begonia rex/masoniana (leaf begonia)

The leaf begonia is an ornamental plant especially appreciated for its decorative leaves. This tropical plant has large leaves with striking colours and patterns.

Care

  • Light: this plant thrives best in a bright spot with indirect sunlight, such as a living room.
  • Water: Keep the soil slightly moist, but not wet. This will prevent root rot. A weekly splash of water is sufficient.

Potting soil

  • Cellmax Terra Universal Soilmix: ideal for leaf begonia thanks to its slightly acidic soil (pH 5-6.5). The coarse perlite ensures good drainage and airiness, which prevents root rot. The organic and mineral fertilisers promote strong root growth and leaf development.
  • Cellmax Terra Light Soilmix: for a more controllable growth process, this potting soil is ideal as it contains minimal fertiliser.

Fertilizers

  • Cellmax Terra Bloom: The balanced NPK ratio of 2-2-6 ensures strong and full flowering of the leaf begonia.

Cuttings and propagation

A leaf begonia can be pricked in several ways. A quick method is to cut off a healthy stem with at least one leaf and a node (the thickened part where roots develop). Place the cutting in a glass of water and roots will develop within 2 to 4 weeks. Once the roots are strong enough, the cutting can be planted in potting soil. Use Cellmax Rootbooster to stimulate root growth and give the cutting a strong start.

Interesting fact

Did you know that the colour of a leaf begonia changes with light? In bright light, the leaves become more intense in colour, while in shade they remain greener. In addition, the leaf begonia acts as a natural air purifier and helps filter pollutants from the air.
