Cactus

(Cactaceae)

Cactus

The cactus is native to desert regions in North and South America. This bugger stores water in its stems, allowing it to go a long time without care. This makes it ideal for those looking for an easy and decorative green housemate.

Size: between 10 cm and 2 metres, depending on the cactus species.

Care

Light: cacti like a lot of sun. Therefore, put your cactus in a bright spot in the house, such as a sunny windowsill....

Water: This succulent needs very little water. Water about once a month in summer and only once every two to three months in winter.

Potting soil

Terra lightmix

  • This potting soil is lightly fertilised and therefore perfect for cacti. The perlite provides an airy structure, reducing the risk of wet soil. The fine peat bark provides a stable base in which the roots can develop well.

Bio soilmix

  • This potting soil is ideal for cacti as the wood fibre and coconut ensure good drainage. Biostimulants, seaweed and natural minerals support strong root development and healthy growth. This potting soil is also certified organic and 100% vegetable, making it perfect for growers who want to grow consciously and sustainably.

Fertilizers

PK booster

Professional booster mix of pure phosphorous and potassium for flowers and fruit. Stimulates the development of the fruits of plants in the flowering phase.

  • This nutrient is low in nitrogen but rich in phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Exactly what a cactus needs. It promotes a strong cell structure and encourages healthy root development.

Cuttings & propagation

Cut or trim a firm spur from the cactus with a smooth cutting edge. Allow the tip to dry for a few days until a kind of 'callus layer' forms. Then put the spur in airy potting soil and place it in a warm place with indirect sunlight to avoid burning. Wait about a week before giving it a little water to allow the roots to develop first.

Interesting fact

Did you know that cacti are real survivors? They can live for decades and there are even species that reach 150 years. Their secret? These succulents require little nutrition and can consist of 90% of water. As a result, they can withstand extreme drought well.
