Hole plant

(Monstera)

Hole plant

The hole plant is a tropical climbing plant from Central and South America. This popular houseplant can be recognised by its large leaves with deep incisions. Thanks to its strong growth and easy care, it is ideal for lovers of lush greenery at home.

Size:
to about 2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide.

Care

Light: this plant does not like direct sunlight, so choose a nice semi-shaded spot in the house for the Monstera.

Water: this tropical plant doesn't need much water. Water it once a week, or every fortnight if it is cooler in the house.

Note: Too much water can damage the roots. You can recognise overwatering by yellow discoloured leaves.

Potting soil & plant food

Bio Soilmix

  • this 100% organic potting soil (RHP) is ideal for tropical plants such as the Monstera. The mix contains plant fertilisers (green compost, seaweed and biostimulants) that are gradually released. The coir, wood fibre and tree bark in this mix provide airiness and prevent wet roots.

Tip: Mix in about 25-30% extra perlite for even better results.

Cellmax Bio 8-2-2

  • this plant food has a high nitrogen content. This stimulates leaf growth and ensures a deep green colour. It is certified organic and therefore rich in organic nutrients such as natural sugars, amonic acids and trace elements. These not only strengthen your plant's resistance, but also prevent salt build-up in the soil.

Usage: Fertilise once or twice a month during the growing period (summer). In winter, additional fertilisation is not necessary.

Cuttings & Propagation

You can cut a hole plant very easily. Choose a stem with at least one leaf and an aerial root or node (thickening on the stem). Cut the stem just below the knot and put it in a glass of water. Change the water every few days. When the roots are 5 to 10 centimetres after a few weeks, you can put the cutting in a pot with soil. Then, do you want to give root growth an extra boost? Then use the Cellmax root booster.

Interesting fact

Did you know that the hole plant has its distinctive holes to catch better light? In tropical rainforests, it often grows under larger plants. Because of the holes, it still catches enough sunlight. And, the holes let wind and rain through more easily, making the leaves less likely to tear.
